The Magic Is In You – Hidden Places

I’m so excited to be travelling to southeastern Europe this week.  People keep asking me where I’m going, and I still have no idea!  Even though I’ve embraced planning more recently (see my post ‘How To Be An Organised Free Spirit‘), I’m going back to my old adventurous ways on this trip!

I’m sure I’ll check off some famous tourist sites, such as Plitvice Lakes in Croatia, and Kotor Bay, Montenegro, but what I’m most looking forward to are those precious moments alone in hidden places.

You don’t have to venture far off the beaten track to find them, you just need an explorer’s attitude!  If you give yourself time to get lost, you can appreciate your surroundings even if you aren’t where you intended to be.

I remember being amazed at the dramatic scenery of Cappadocia, Turkey, along with many other tourists.  The hot air balloon ride was out of this world, and the fairy chimney rock formations were incredible.  However, the best part was getting lost in this arid landscape.  I vividly remember quiet moments alone, away from the main sights, scrambling up sandy slopes, through bushes, with thorns in my shoes!

Rose Valley, Cappadocia

You don’t have to travel far to discover secret treasures though.  I’m still finding new hidden spots within walking distance of home, and often have to remind myself of where I am, as I feel like I could be hundreds of miles away.

That’s the beauty of going somewhere new, even if it’s just a quiet park you’ve never been to before.  For a moment you feel as though you have been transported to another world.

Meditation

Explore a hidden place, near or far, or just somewhere quiet that you’ve never been before.  As you take in your surroundings, contemplate how many hidden places there must be in the world.  Even if you spent your whole life trying, you couldn’t begin to see them all.

As you explore this new place, let it be a reminder of the endless adventures that are possible.  Adventure doesn’t need to be about location, it is a feeling that comes from within (see my post ‘The Benefit Of An Adventurous Mindset‘).  If you keep your eyes and mind open there are opportunities everywhere to make new discoveries.

Notice the tingles of excitement you get when discovering a new corner of this beautiful planet.  Your senses become heightened as you experience this place for the first time.  Spend as long as you wish soaking in this feeling.  Try to capture it in a few words or photos, so that you can return to it later.

There are so many amazing miracles happening all around us.  Let this experience of exploring a hidden place be a reminder to stay tuned in to the spirit of discovery, so that we can witness more of this magic every day.

Exploring hidden places is such a great way to find a bit of peace and reset our busy minds.  Is it something you already do regularly, or something you want to do more of?  Let me know in the comments below 🙂

The Magic Is In You – The Forest’s Embrace

Being amongst the trees is one of the most effortless ways to connect with nature.  We are literally surrounded by the magic of the forest, held in its gentle embrace.  There is the perfect balance of comfort and wildness, the canopy providing protection and shelter, and supporting a myriad of life forms.

The light is softened as it filters through the branches, and the sounds of birds, insects and rustling leaves form a gentle background murmur.  The trees connect the earth and the sky, creating a safe haven where life can thrive.  It is the perfect place to slow down, and take in the precious gifts of our surroundings.

Forest Meditation

Find some woodland to explore.  The intention with this meditation is to relax into this supportive environment.  Even if there are only a few trees nearby, this is enough to benefit from immensely if you take your time and allow the magic in.  Feel how the forest softens our thoughts and allows us to feel a little more comfort in our bodies.  Breathe in the fresh air, and soak up all of the enchanting beauty that surrounds you.

Appreciate the variety of shapes, textures and patterns in this hidden world.  Notice how your inner landscape is just as varied.  If we can observe our thoughts and emotions in the same non judgemental way, we can see their beauty, even when they are ‘negative’.  Allow the forest to be a sanctuary where it is easy to be peaceful no matter what your mental, physical and emotional state.

Know that the feeling of being held and protected is available to us wherever we are.  When you leave the forest, you can still return to this sanctuary within your own mind whenever you choose to.

Take a photo, or bring a leaf, twig or some reminder of the woods with you.  When you get home spend 5 minutes meditating with this reminder, recalling the sense of peace and relaxation you felt.  It may be easier to feel at peace when immersed in a beautiful natural environment, but with practice we can access this state wherever we are.

Do you find it easy to recall the peace of the forest?  Next time you are amongst the trees, what can you do to make the most of it and relax more fully, so that you can bring more of the benefits back with you?  Leave a comment below and share your experiences and inspiration with me.

The Magic Is In You – The Mystery Of The Night

There is something so comforting about darkness.

The parts of ourselves that like to stay hidden from the world can relax into the shadows and feel safe once again.  The night contains all of these secrets effortlessly.  Everything is accepted and absorbed, never judged, leaving us with a sense of freedom rarely felt in the day time.

This ability of darkness to contain absolutely anything can also bring fear.  Our imaginations run wild.  This could be a good thing and bring much inspiration, but often we imagine the worst.  We start to believe that maybe something out there wants to harm us.  We don’t know what is hiding under the blanket of darkness.

The point though, is that we don’t know.  This unknown is an infinite space in which anything is possible.  It is a MYSTERY.

Darkness Meditation

Your task is to find the sweet spot between fear and comfort as you become encased by darkness.  Choose a place where you know you will be safe, but allow yourself to feel the mystery of the unknown.  Taking a walk in semi darkness can be good because your surroundings change, but the darkness remains a constant that is with you the whole time.  You can also keep it really simple and sit in a darkened room, as most of this experience will be with your imagination.

As you feel the darkness envelope you, notice any changes in your body.  Do you feel calmer or more on edge?  Fear is our ally in this case, because if you can feel the fear you are closer to experiencing the mystery of the night.  Know that your fear is because of the infinite possibilities that lurk in the shadows.  Allow yourself to melt into these possibilities, knowing that there are more than you could ever imagine.  As well as the infinite number of terrifying scenarios, there are an infinite number of wonderful things that could happen.

Glastonbury Tor at night

If you naturally feel comfortable in the dark, enjoy the freedom this brings you.  Move around and explore, without self consciousness.  As you slowly explore your mysterious surroundings, notice how this brings you closer to the sweet spot we are seeking.  You start to feel a tiny spark inside you.  You are no longer in your comfortable bubble, but are beginning to reach out to the mystery beyond.

Once you have experimented with finding the balance between comfort and fear, allow yourself to dissolve into the night.  Feel the liberation of being temporarily free from the penetrating light which exposes us.  There is no need to be any particular way, you can just let go.

Enjoy this feeling for as long as you wish.  When you have finished the meditation, write down a couple of sentences or words which will help you to keep a little of this mystery and freedom with you.

The more we practise connecting with the magical aspects of ourselves, the easier it becomes.  Feeling abstract things such as mystery and freedom can be difficult if our minds are busy.  With all of these meditations, the main priority should be to relax.  In time, and with regular practise, I have become more able to tap into these feelings through visualisation.  I hope that my suggestions can help you to do this too.  Don’t be too rigid with yourself, and have fun with it.  Please feel free to share anything you find inspiring or helpful in the comments below.  Thank you 🙂

The Magic Is In You – Floating On A Cloud

The sky is putting on a show for me as I write this post.  Glowing light reflects on a slowly changing infinite variety of soft shapes floating through the sky in front of me.  I feel myself becoming lighter with an inner glow emerging as I gaze through the window.

I wonder if the sky is getting more beautiful every day?  The more I look the more I see, in a never ending exploration of an ever changing dreamscape.

Cloud Meditation

Choose a time and a place where you can observe clouds.  It doesn’t matter if you’re lying on the ground, walking, or looking out of a window, as long as you are comfortable.  Focus on an aspect or aspects of the clouds that you find most appealing.  Is it the slow drifting movement that reminds you to slow down?  Is it the way they are suspended in the air that reminds you to feel lighter in your mind and body?  Do you find comfort in the soft shapes, or is it the vast open space of the sky holding the clouds that speaks to your heart?

Whether it is one or some of the above aspects you choose to focus on, or something different entirely, let it be something that inspires you.  Take a few minutes to focus on this magic, and feel it resonate within you.

Know that by taking this time to focus on the clouds, you are strengthening your own cloud like qualities.  You will feel more softness, lightness, spaciousness, peace, or whatever it is that you desire, whenever you choose to remember this experience.  All you need to do is look up at the sky, and this will remind you of your inner cloud magic!

The Magic Is In You – Elevation

See ‘The Magic Is In You’ for an introduction to this series of posts, which aim to inspire us to connect with the magic of ourselves and the world around us.

This post is about the magic of climbing mountains, ascending to the high point of a city in a cable car, gazing out across the horizon from a plane, or taking in an expansive view from the top of a hill or tower.

Whenever I am exploring somewhere, getting up high is a priority.  Rising above the tangled web of streets or new terrain that I have been wandering makes me feel at home in the world.  When I stare down at the tiny buildings and see the shape of the land from a distance, I feel as though I belong here, in this strange and beautiful place.

I have attempted to capture the essence of this wonderful natural high in the meditation below.

Elevation Meditation

Find a high place where you can look out across the horizon and down at the land below.  This could be a bridge, church tower, small hill, top floor apartment, mountain, hot air balloon, rooftop or helicopter, depending on the options that are available to you!  Make sure you are safe and comfortable.

The purpose of this meditation is to bring a sense of elevation to your mind and body.  Set your intention to allow the physical sense of elevation and perspective you get from being up high to permeate your entire being.

Breathe in the vast open space in front of you.  Observe the tiny objects (buildings, trees, people, cars, rivers) that exist in your landscape.  Feel the sense of calm that comes over you as you rise up above everything.  See how the land becomes a patchwork of colours and shapes beneath you.  It is easier to accept everything as it is from a distance, without getting caught up in the details.

Imagine that you can float over the whole scene before you.  Feel the sense of freedom that brings.  It’s amazing to see how such a vast region can shrink down to fit into our field of vision.

Soak up the colours and contours of the world you see.  Let the beautiful patterns leave an imprint on your heart.  Notice how structures you may perceive to be ‘ugly’ from the ground become just another piece of the puzzle, slotting into the shapes around them, forming part of the whole.  We need to make judgements in order to navigate life, but we must also know how to step back into this more peaceful place where we simply allow everything to be.

Begin to merge with the landscape and the boundless space that contains it.  Breathe in the entire scene and allow it to become a part of you.  Feel how you can hold this mighty vision, and infinitely many more, within you.  The majestic picture you observe is just one tiny fragment of the universe inside your mind.

After you have finished absorbing all of the elevated good vibes, take some time to acknowledge any inspiring aspects of your experience that you would like to bring back with you.  Write a few words or take some photos as a reminder.  These could be things you felt, such as spaciousness or empowerment, or a particular image that will evoke these emotions.  It can be really wonderful to recall an elevating experience when we’re in more mundane, busy or stressful environments.

Remember the feeling of elevation, so that you can use it in the future to rise above worries for a broader view of a situation.  We can view all of our thoughts from this elevated perspective if we choose to, watching them peacefully from a distance.

Thank you for reading and participating.  I hope that you get the chance to enjoy many beautiful views and float up on a cloud to a heavenly place of peace and wonder!  Please share your uplifting experiences with me in the comments below.

The Magic Is In You – Water Wonderland

This is the second in an experimental series of posts about connecting to the magic within and all around us.  You can read the first post here as a general introduction to the idea.

I have chosen water as the theme because it is the one aspect of nature I can always rely on to soothe and calm me wherever I am.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

The inspiration for this post didn’t come to me in the clear turquoise waters of a tropical island, beautiful lake, or river though.  It was bubbling away in the jacuzzi at my local spa.

As I sat there in a peaceful daze, visions came to me of past times I’d been happily submerged in water, in places far and wide.

Imagined future scenes also flashed before me, until these visions enveloped me into a water wonderland which merged with the swirling delight of my present surroundings.

I sank deeper into the hot bubbling whirlpool in a dreamy stupor, and in that moment, all of my trepidation about leaving my current life behind to go off alone into the unknown again dissolved.  I knew that wherever I was I would always have this.  I could always return to the water world of my dreams that existed somewhere between planet earth and a paradise-like realm, where water was a sacred gift from the gods.

Water Meditation

Submerge yourself in water.  It could be in a bath, a river, lake, pool, hot tub or the sea.  (I have recently discovered the joy of having a wetsuit, which means I can swim comfortably even in the freezing cold water of the UK!)  Find a safe quiet spot where you feel happy to stay for a while.  Or, if you feel calmer on the move, find an open space where you can swim slowly without being disturbed.

The main aim of this activity is to relax and connect with your own magical water dreamland.  Use the flowing quality of water to wash away any negativity in your mind and body, and feel how you become almost weightless.  Feel yourself dissolving into the water, becoming more and more peaceful with every breath you take.

Your body begins to merge with the water, your movements becoming more fluid and easeful.  You are one with the water, and realise that all of the peace and calm that the water provides already exists within you.  Allow the twinkling reflections on the surface of the water, and swirling shapes your body makes as you move, to transport you to your water wonderland.

Sunset, Barbados

Allow images of beautiful waterfalls, lakes, rivers and oceans to float through your mind.  Enjoy the anticipation of visiting these places, and the special memories of places you have already been.  You are infinitely peaceful, and have a deep appreciation for this precious gift.

There is no set time for this meditation.  Personally, I could spend hours in water without getting bored, but everyone is different.  When you have finished, write down a few words under the heading of ‘water wonderland’ to remind you of this experience, or collect some pictures to create a collage of dream water paradises you would like to visit.

Try to take some of this relaxation and fluidity you have experienced with you into the coming days.  Allow peace to ripple out from you in all directions, and feel like you can float through any difficulties you may encounter.

Thank you for joining me in our water wonderland, I hope you enjoyed it!  Leave me a comment and tell me about your favourite places and inspiring experiences below ❤

The Magic Is In You

This is the first in an experimental series of short posts where I will share ideas designed to inspire us to connect with the magic of nature, and the magic of ourselves.

the magic is in you2

I was thinking along the lines of mini challenges, meditations and adventures, but will be adapting the format as we progress, so your feedback will be extremely helpful.

Intention is the number one thing to keep in mind when taking part in any of the challenges.  The purpose is to step outside of our regular world, and into one where anything is possible;  to rediscover child-like wonder, and become enchanted by our surroundings.  By incorporating our strong intention to see the magic wherever we are, we begin to realize that if we look for the beauty, and go calmly with peace in our hearts, the world sparkles in response.

The magic is in you.

So as to let this idea settle in, our first magical experience together will be a very simple one:

Bring the idea ‘THE MAGIC IS IN YOU’ to an activity of your choice.  It could be something you already do on a regular basis, such as walking, swimming, running, sitting on the bus or meditating, or you can choose something new.  It only needs to be for about 15 minutes, but feel free to shorten or lengthen the time depending on your feeling.

For this amount of time, choose to see or feel the magic in whatever you are doing.  If you find this difficult, it may be easier to choose to be somewhere in the natural world, such as a forest or near a river, where there are lots of beautiful things to appreciate.

Vintgar Gorge, Slovenia

Slow down your thoughts, and gaze with a twinkle in your eye at whatever is around you.  Don’t label or analyze anything, just appreciate anything you find beautiful or magical, like the colours, the shapes, or the patterns of light reflecting on different surfaces.

reflections

If you are moving, try to make your movements smooth and harmonious.  Move as if you are completely at peace.  Move as if you are magic.  Move as if you are infinite.  If you are still, use the feeling of stillness to sink deeper and deeper into peace.

When you have finished, write down 3 good things about your experience.  These can be as simple as ‘felt relaxed’, ‘beautiful light’, or ‘fresh air’.  Feel free to be more elaborate if you are inspired.  The main aim of this part is to remember the magical things you appreciated during your experience.

The more we focus on the magic, the more it will grow.  I feel infinitely more at peace with myself since I have made this my regular practice.  I hope that it will inspire you, and fill you with joy and happiness!  Please let me know what magical things you found to appreciate in the comments below 🙂
